Text features is an important part of the English Language Arts informational writing curriculum. Students need to know to look for captions in nonfiction text and read them for help with understanding the text.
Kids love to build, what’s more they love to be challenged. Zoob Builderz STEM Challenge is designed for both. Students must read and create using the Zoob Builder pieces. Pieces include gears, axles, joints, wheels, and more for students to snap together.
Students need to check the accuracy of what they see on the Internet. Young children will especially have a difficult time knowing what is real or fake. Netsmartzkids has an excellent video for students to watch and learn how to fact check.
This activity assumes that students have some familiarity with using the Chrome browser, most likely a Chromebook before (probably in a previous grade). Using a simple KWL chart on a Google Doc, students can collaborate and acquire shortcuts for using a Chromebook (or just the Chrome browser) more efficiently.
Google Scholar Citations provide a simple way for students to keep track of citations to their articles. When students are using Google Docs to write their papers, they can easily link and cite the articles used for references.
Zoterobib also known as Zbib is a free online tool that helps you cite anything from any device. Students are able to copy and paste a title or a book, website, photo, etc and Zbib will easily cite the source. Students can then copy and paste the bibliography into their work.
Students enjoy teaching others. In fact, research says that when students teach others their own learning increases. QR codes are a way for students to teach community members about their local community.
Dash and Dot are robots that can sense, act and think! Coding with robots is great fun!! Students use block coding iPad apps to control their robots. Students will have a ball designing, testing theories and refining their code to create paths for the robots to follow.
Google Sites are a great platform to communicate both locally & globally. They are easy to set up for your students and easy to link information both individually for your students as well as setting up a group or classroom page. Our classrooms are busy places of learning and we feel strong about giving back to our Community & teaching our students at a young age the feeling of giving. We begin teaching the Core Democratic Value of common good in early elementary BUT until we DO it, the meaning can get lost. Google Sites is a great tech tool to implement for your Community Service projects & beyond!
In first grade students begin learning about basic nutrition and how to grow plants in a cup or small planter. In this lesson, the students will take it a step further and students will learn how to create a community garden and share the food. The students will use brainstorming apps to plan the garden and create a poster to advertise the garden.
Padlet is an online post-it-like board that you can use as an easy collaboration platform for students. Padlets can be created by you or students. Once created, student can share ideas and comment on other students as well.
Stoodle is where users can join an online classroom by simply sharing an URL. It offers real time collaboration and communication, multiple users can work on the same virtual whiteboard at the same time through text chat and voice conferencing using their computer’s microphone. They also can type, draw, and search and upload images.
The purpose of this unit is to put students in the driver’s seat of their own reading by considering their own preferences and what it means to be a connected reader in our multi-media society.This unit begins with students considering their own reading profile and inquiring about the impact of reading digital texts compared to print texts and what it means to be a connected reader in today’s multi-media society. Students then gather information by reading three texts on the topic which move them through modeling and guided practice to independent practice. As they read each text, they complete a comprehension chart. These will serve as formative assessments on the supported readings and as a reading assessment on the independent text. They will also be used as notes for an expository and an argumentative writing prompt. Teachers will also have the option of expanding the unit with student created graphic organizers and/or presentations.
The students are going to have their own chance to participate in a continuous story. One student starts the story and is given a certain amount of time for telling it. Another student will continue the story and each student will have a chance to add to it. The teacher will use ePals and submit their idea to find another classroom to collaborate together in the story. The students will learn about each other's cultures and lives through the storytelling.
Thomas Edison is a famous inventor. His work with the telegraph and telephone led him to invent the phonograph, which recorded sound as indentations on a sheet of paraffin-coated paper. Students can listen to his first recordings at the NPS (National Park Services) archives. Students will learn how to create their own recordings at the Online Voice Recorder.
MyStoryBook is a user-friendly website that allows students to create their own stories. Tools are provided to help design and create stories. Once completed they can be saved.
Using Photopeach, students will create a digital slideshow that showcases their learning. Photopeach is an application where in just minutes the students can create a rich slideshow. Photopeach supports background music, captions, and comments so students can elaborate on their story further.
Lucidchart is a visual platform for creating flowcharts and graphic organizers in real-time. Students under the guidance of teachers can use the free version.
Creating a story is not an easy task. What should I write about? Who will the characters be in my story? What will happen? These are all questions that every author needs to answer before their story can take shape. Storybird is an online community that provides original artwork to inspire students. The artwork sparks their imagination and supports story creation. Collaboration can take place when students invite others to work on their story with them.
